Laura
The first light of dawn peeked through the curtains of the Casper's C'mon Inn, gently pulling me from the depths of sleep. Lying there in the soft embrace of the bed, my thoughts lazily drifted to the night before â the warmth of Dusty's arms, and how our desire flowed effortlessly. It felt like a dream that had left a lingering sense of contentment in its wake.
Turning my head, I watched Bella nestled beside me in peaceful slumber. Her chest rose and fell in a rhythm that spoke of tranquil dreams, a stark contrast to the whirlwind of our lives lately. Watching her like this, a sleeping angel, I felt a surge of maternal love and protection. She was my world; every decision and step I took was with her future in mind.
I slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb her, and padded softly to the small kitchenette. The ritual of making coffee brought a comforting normalcy to the morning. As the rich aroma filled the room, I mulled over our plans for the day. Dusty had promised to take us out for breakfast, a simple gesture that meant so much to Bella and me.
With my coffee in hand, I settled by the window, the early morning light casting a golden hue across the room. I opened my emails, scanning through them with half an interest. Most were routine, a few more bookings for hunting trips, a nod to the marketing success of our presence at the rodeo and fair. My mind, however, was only partially on business. It drifted back to Dusty, to the possibilities that lay ahead for us.
Bella stirred, her sleepy eyes fluttering open. "Morning, Mommy," she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.
"Good morning, love," I replied, setting aside my phone. "Get ready, Dusty's taking us for breakfast."
Her face lit up at the mention of Dusty, and she hurried to dress. As the clock ticked past 8:00 AM, and there was still no word from him, I felt a twinge of worry. Should I call him? I decided to wait a bit longer, giving him the benefit of the doubt. Bella, now ready and bouncing with excitement, turned on the TV to find some cartoons.
8:30 AM rolled around, still no sign of Dusty. My heart sank a little. I sent a text, hoping for a quick response. When none came, I tried calling, only to be redirected to his voicemail. Doubt crept in, darkening the bright promise of the day. Had he changed his mind about breakfast, about us? Had he been overwhelmed by the thought of dealing with a child?
As I grappled with my worries, my mother called, inviting us to join them for breakfast in the café downstairs. Trying to mask my disappointment, I agreed. I had to be strong for Bella, who was now on the brink of tears, her heart set on breakfast with Dusty.
With a heavy heart, I tried calling Dusty one last time. Again, only voicemail greeted me. Frustration
